Ginkgo Bioworks has appointed Brian O’Sullivan as Head of Commercial for Ginkgo Automation, signaling a major step in scaling its external market presence. Based in Boston, O’Sullivan will oversee sales, business development, channel partnerships, marketing, and customer success, driving adoption of Ginkgo Automation’s modular RAC hardware, Catalyst orchestration software, and remote monitoring services.

Previously at HighRes Biosolutions, O’Sullivan built commercial teams from the ground up, expanded into Europe and Asia Pacific, and executed large automation projects across life sciences sectors. His leadership experience also spans Agilent Technologies, Velocity11, and Beckman Coulter. At Ginkgo Automation, his priority will be deepening enterprise client relationships and accelerating market penetration in biopharma, diagnostics, and national laboratories.
Ginkgo Automation’s move reflects a broader trend: life science automation companies are competing on more than just technology—they’re competing on the ability to integrate seamlessly into research operations and deliver measurable business impact. Leaders who understand both the science and the market are becoming indispensable in translating advanced tools into real-world results.
As the demand for AI-ready, closed-loop lab automation grows, appointments like this will shape how fast innovation reaches the bench. Ginkgo’s bet on O’Sullivan positions the company to capture that momentum.
